#NAKEDGARMENTS photo and interview series is our creative collaboration with a Düsseldorf based photographer FALCO PETERS.

With a motto “Loved Clothes Last”, the series aims to spur a movement of resistance against fast fashion and consumerism culture and to radically redefine the way we perceive and consume fashion.

Under the patronage of Dr. Vera Geisel, the series started in February 2020 and regularity portrays protagonists of the Düsseldorf sustainability, innovation, design and business scene. It reveals people in a very clear but emotional way and create awareness of the FASHION REVOLUTION movement and its manifestations in various individuals. The (role)models discuss their relationship to fashion and the role that fashion plays in their professional context. They all talk about their favorite piece of clothing and reveal its unique and personal story. Anyone can relate to this, as all of us have at least one garment that is very dear to us and might even be inspired to appreciate it a little more, because:

"The most sustainable garment is the one
already in your wardrobe.“

Fashion is deeply embedded – physically as well as emotionaly – in our everyday life, our upbringing, as well as our professional and social context. The first thing we do in the morning is choosing what to wear. However, our wardrobes often do not align with our values.

In the 21st century, consumerism got woven into the fabric of our culture. While fast fashion democratized fashion and allowed everyone to communicate through clothing regardless of their economic backgrounds, it came with major social and environmental costs. According to the UNITED NATIONS ENVIRONMENT PROGRAMME, the fashion industry produces 20 percent of global wastewater and 10 percent of global carbon emissions, which is more than all international flights and maritime shipping. The industry is also known for its poor working conditions and gender-based inequality.

There are numerous hands involved in making a single piece of garment. Hence, every piece has its story, the story of its origin. However, we, as consumers, also make our experiences and memories by wearing clothing. A piece of garment can carry numerous memories and evoke feelings. However, with the clothing costs going down, we stopped valuing the art and craft of fashion making and often forget about the amount of natural resources that go into the garment production. As a result, GLOBAL FASHION AGENDA estimates that textile waste will increase by 60 percent between 2015 and 2030.

A study by WRAP shows that extending the life of clothing by an extra nine months of active use would reduce carbon, waste and water footprints by around 20-30 percent. Hence, working towards increasing the active life of the garments is a significant opportunity in driving the fashion industry towards sustainability. However, to achieve this, we need a cultural shift.

With the launch of the CHANGE ROOM platform, we are in the business of changing culture. Changing culture takes time. But we think it is worth it and hope that the #NAKEDGARMENTS project will inspire you to cherish and celebrate the clothes you have a little bit longer, reconnect with yourself and your upbringing and also share the stories of your garments.

Stories are very powerful. Stories connect people. They did is so since the beginning of mankind. We hope they will help us to rediscover the Düsseldorf fashion scene and create a community, which sees fashion consumption as a collaborative act. So, stay tuned to hear more about Düsseldorf’s #changemakers and the stories of their garments!
