With over 300 participants and international speakers, for the sixth time, the Fashion Revolution event took place in Düsseldorf – and for the first time completely digitally! The event was part of the global Fashion Revolution Week that marked seven years since the Rana Plaza factory collapse on April 24th, 2013. But has there been any noticeable improvements in the working conditions in the garment factories?

With the global pandect shaking-up our lives and the economy alike, the fashion industry is in crises. Now, more than ever before, it is important to continue asking  #WhoMadeMyClothes? The global fashion industry needs your attention, support and for most, collective and innovative approaches.

With our new format Fashion Revolution Düsseldorf ONLINE, we gathered the sustainable fashion community, exchanged best practices, and provided a platform for regional brands to present their work! To recap the best moments and key messages, check out our event video!

The afternoon started with a session on Supply Chain Transparency with five inspiring speakers. Dr. Gisela Burckhardt from FEMNET, and Otang Andriko from TRADE UNION RIGHTS CENTER, in Jakarta Indonesia shed more light on the developments of the garment workers’ rights after the Rana Plaza and provided first-hand insights on how the pandemic is currently influencing the garment factories and their workers. In Bangladesh, 90 percent of the 4,000 to 6,000 textile factories are currently closed and export orders worth 3.13 billion euros have been cancelled. COVID-19 is driving the textile industry into a corner, endangering the livelihood of countless workers, stressed Dr. Gisela Burckhardt.

The discussion was accompanied by the film producer Patrick Kohl and journalist Helen Fares who gave a sneak peek of their recent documentary film in Cambodia THE CONSCIENCE OF CLOTHING. The session ended with a presentation by Lavinia Muth from ARMEDANGELS on the importance of sustainable sourcing, pricing transparency, and on the community-driven solutions that the Cologne-based sustainable band is applying during the uncertain economic times. All speaker presentations are available for your review on Google Drive.

An afternoon of insights, solidarity, and sustainable style!

A special feature of the event was a live yoga session with Dr. Liina Puustinen, founder of the YOGICWAYwho keeps everyone energized and focused!

The second session started with a welcome note by the Düsseldorf’s Lord Mayor Thomas Geisel and the first lady Dr. Vera Geisel. Next, Lucy Acton from HSBC LONDON GLOBAL RESEARCH provided a financial outlook of the global fashion industry. To promote the entrepreneurial spirit, the afternoon ended with an interactive session in an old good “Teleshopping Style” with sustainable fashion entrepreneurs and designers, CANO SHOESTEPHANIE POTHENROBERTA ORGANIC, and VINOKILO. All of them were hit by the Corona crisis and used the opportunity to share their stories as well as show their Spring/Summer Collections.

We are pleased about the community spirit and warm-heartedness of the Düsseldorf fair fashion industry. Everybody collaborated and tried to make this event as good as possible – solidarity and community-feeling are especially important in these times!
